Inside the peloton: Robert Powers

GFNY – FROM AN INGURY TO DISCOVERING CYCLING

(Spanish below)

Marine Veteran Finds a New Challenge Through Cycling at GFNY Pittsburgh

Robert Powers has always enjoyed staying active. But after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2006 to 2011, he was left with Achilles and posterior tibial tendon injuries that changed what his body could handle.

Running, squats, and deadlifts all became painful. Even with custom orthotics, an ankle brace, and daily icing, the pain never really went away. Eventually, he had to accept that running wasn’t going to be part of his life anymore.

Rather than giving up, Robert started looking for something new.

After struggling with CrossFit and the gym, a close friend—who also works with him as an aircraft mechanic—suggested he try cycling. It didn’t take long before he was hooked. He bought a Trek Émonda and, for the first time in years, found a sport that let him train hard without making his injury worse.

In just one year, cycling has completely changed his life. He’s lost weight, improved his fitness, cleaned up his nutrition by tracking his macros, and, most importantly, found something that genuinely makes him happy. Most of his rides are solo, and those quiet hours on the bike have become a form of therapy.

Earlier this year, Robert traveled to Panama with friends to ride his very first Gran Fondo. It wasn’t easy—he was sick and had to battle the Panamanian heat—but crossing that finish line made every mile worth it. The experience introduced him to the cycling community and showed him the kind of rider he wants to become.

Now he’s getting ready for his first GFNY at GFNY Pittsburgh. He’s excited for the challenge of the course’s climbs and hopes it’ll be the first of many GFNY events. Living in New Jersey, there are several GFNY races within driving distance, and he’s already looking forward to what’s next.

Robert’s advice for anyone dealing with an injury is simple:

“Never give up trying to find a way around an injury. I used to focus on what I couldn’t do. Now, because of cycling, I don’t think about my limitations anymore. I just look forward to training and becoming a better cyclist.”
